Last week, our scholars visited Arkansas State University College of Agriculture during a beyond-the-walls experience. Thanks to Dr. Nina Crutchfield and her excellent scholars, who facilitated an amazing day.
Our scholars got the chance to broaden their horizons by learning about various aspects of the agriculture industry. They were exposed to various activities such as exploring the poultry industry, observing candle egg production, understanding the use of drones in agriculture, watching a drone flying demonstration, visiting a cow-calf operation, witnessing a CNC machine demonstration, and creating wooden robot keychains.
Special thanks to our Agriculture Business Educator, Ms. Mahan for coordinating this field experience.

Beyond the Walls Experiences
University of Arkansas Extension
Mrs. Marley Shaddox (Pulaski County 4-H Extension Agent) and Mr. Derek Reed (County Extension Agent—Agriculture/Horticulture) visited our scholars to educate them on 4-H and landscape design. Scholars learned the importance of teamwork and different landscape design elements (site/plant selection, measuring, plant care, drafting designs, etc.).
Arkansas Tech Univesity
The scholars explored the farm and College of Agriculture with Dr. Justin Killingsworth and his team.

Great things are happening through our AgriSTEM initiative!
Scholars have harvested nasturtium - an edible flower.
Become hydroponic rice farmers.
We have harvested bok choy.
Scholars have learned that it’s good for regulating high blood pressure. It contains potassium, magnesium, calcium, folate, vitamins B6, C, and A, and 70 antioxidants. It also helps reduce inflammation and is a great candidate for cancer prevention.
We are thriving and excited about the amazing new additions to our campuses.

Transformation really can take shape beyond the walls.
Our very own Mrs. Herrin connected with local farmer Mr. Luigi Campos, who generously donated a (Tower Garden Rack - Vertical Farming) to empower our scholars to discover their inner urban farmer. The Flightline campus can now grow 128 plants at a time, harvested every 45 days.
Over the upcoming weeks, our JR MANRRS scholars will learn how to do daily water testing and a variety of other skills to tackle some critical food system issues occurring throughout the globe.
They will grow fresh specialty crops, including lettuce, beets, radishes, bok choy, carrots, flowers, and herbs. Our scholars are eager and committed to transforming our community and our world.
Special thanks to the Arkansas Department of Agriculture and your continued support.
